The Bowditch Race is on August 6th 2011. This 6-mile race is held in Salem Harbor at 2 p.m. After the race, PCYC extends warm hospitality to crews and their families to enjoy a BBQ on the deck, an awards ceremony, and a night of dancing with the Swamptones, followed by a Sunday brunch. Regatta is the first named committee in the PCYC bylaws.
PCYC’s racing history in Salem Harbor and beyond dates back to the Club’s early years.
Several years ago, the Regatta Committee was very active, hosting overnight races and participating in many other challenges; but things got a little quieter as our elder yachtsmen gave up their helms and only a few dedicated racers remained to represent PCYC.
Dismayed by the waning participation, a few sailors who remembered the “good old days” actively recruited new members and built the committee membership up again. The Committee decided to re-energize the racing fleet with a new race for Salem: the Bowditch Race – now in it’s 6th year and going strong. Our motto for the Bowditch is to run a professional and challenging race – but have a fantastic party afterwards!
The Regatta Committee also holds the annual John Derflinger Award Single-Handed Race and the Lucy Houde Memorial Lady Skippers Race.
PCYC was honored to win the prestigious MBSA Yacht Club of the Year Award for 2008.
The Committee also maintains a fleet of Capri boats for the club (open to all members for use), and conducts a Tuesday night race series.
Several of our members race in high profile events such as the New England Championships, Figawi (Hyannis to Nantucket), the Beringer (Marblehead to Provincetown), the Marblehead to Halifax race, Newport-Bermuda race, and others. With satellite tracking links on our website, the Club supports our crews wherever their courses take them.
