Local Knowledge: Salem Harbor is a notoriously dangerous harbor to navigate, especially at low tide, due to the many scattered shoals and rock formations, lobster pots, lost moorings, and several other unmarked hazards. Low tide depths are 1-12 feet. There are 2 major shipping channels - Marblehead and Beverly (that becomes the Salem channel) - which are the safest means to enter Salem Harbor. There are some areas of the channel that need dredging, so mind your depth sounder! The no-wake zone in Salem Harbor is strictly enforced. Be wary of ledges - for example, the lighthouse off of Winter Island has a mooring field behind it, but it is extremely shallow. Contact the Salem Harbormaster (978) 741-0098 or VHF: Ch 16 Calling / Ch 12 Working for assistance.
